Box Score The #15 ranked Highland volleyball team traveled to Fort Scott, KS to take on the (RV) Fort Scott Greyhounds looking for their 20
th win of the season and another KJCCC win. An anticipated match-up was brewing with Fort Scott having been ranked as high as 8
th in the NJCAA earlier in the season and Highland now ranked #15. Fort Scott took the first set on their home court but the Scotties worked to win the next three to take the match 3-1.
Sophomore
Leslie Polanco was on fire in the first set putting down seven kills along with freshman
Mallory Wagner who picked up seven digs. The team could not capitalize and with too many small errors the Greyhounds took the set over the Scotties 19-25.
With an experienced Polanco and
Koie Orozco defensive duo alongside libero
Kirsten Johnson, their defense picked up 18 digs.
Emma Cohalla had a big stuff block leading 21-16 forcing a Greyhound timeout. Long rallies lied ahead in the next crucial points and Highland took a timeout finding their lead had dwindled to 24-21. An error on the Greyhounds gave the Scotties the game point to win 25-23.
The 3
rd set started in favor of the home team with the Scotties trailing 3-8 early. Both teams proved their worth in the rest of the set with the Scotties going on a 10 of the next 11 point run to lead 13-9. The Greyhounds turned it around and grabbed the momentum to tie the game up at 18-18. An ace by Polanco and a double block by Cohalla and Orozco helped the team to finish 25-21.
Neither team let up their fight and energy keeping the 4
th set back and forth early with Highland always a few points ahead. Zealia Keitz put down five kills late to help push the lead 19-12. The Scotties finished the match off a kill by Fisher to win 25-19.
Polanco and Kleitz both continue to be a consistent and reliable duo. Polanco recorded her 14
th double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs and two aces. Kleitz also added 14 kills of her own hitting a .407. Johnson and Orozco both contributed with double digit digs with 16 and 11 followed by Wagner with eight.
Emma Cohalla had an aggressive block totaling six on the match and
Katie Pearson had 37 assists and six digs.
The Scotties are now 20-5 overall this season and 5-1 in conference play. They will travel to Boone, IA to face three tough match-ups: North Dakota State College of Science, #19 Waubonsee CC, Des Moines Area CC, and #14 Kirkwood CC on Friday and Saturday, October 6th and 7th.
