Highland Community College traveled to Kansas City Kansas Community College to take on the Blue Devils (3-3) in their 2
nd conference matchup of the season.
Set 1 saw a big front row presence by the Scotties leading 8-3 before an early first time out by the Blue Devils. The tough serves kept the Blue Devils from being able to find their rhythm. As HCC lead 18-14,
Emma Cohalla produced a big kill off of setter
Katie Pearson resulting in another Blue Devil timeout. An ace by
Leslie Polanco right out of the time out helped push the Scotties to win 25-18.
Highland took an early 4-point lead in the second set 8-4. Â The Blue Devils get momentum off of HCC errors and came back to lead 13-11 before a Scottie timeout. A block by Pearson and Cohalla helped increase the energy for the Scotties as they got the lead back 16-14. Highland kept pushing until the end to win 25-20.
The match shifted badly for Highland as they saw themselves down 19-6 in the third set and would eventually lose 11-25. The rhythm and composure for the Scotties could not be found and again, lost the fourth set 17-25.
An early timeout by KCKCC was called after they saw an ace by
Koie Orozco and kill by
Zealia Kleitz; HCC up 4-0 in the fifth set. Sophomore Kleitz took control of the front row extending the lead 6-0 causing another timeout by KCKCC. The Blue Devils went on a 5 point run seeing 6-5. The Scotties produced a block by Kleitz and a kill by Polanco to lead 10-5 and did not look back. Highland won the fifth set 15-5 ending on a big kill by Polanco.
Polanco produced her 10
th double-double of her sophomore season with 16 kills (.333 hitting percentage) and 27 digs. Libero
Kirsten Johnson came up with 20 digs; her third best mark of the season. Sophomore's Kleitz and Orozco both put down 10 kills each. Freshman outside
Sydney Prine showcased her skills putting down five kills and 12 digs. Setter Pearson continued to be a force with 39 set assists and eight digs.
The Highland volleyball team will travel to Fort Dodge, Iowa to partake in a triangular on Friday, September 15
