Box Score The KJCCC dominates the Top 5 in the NJCAA Division II volleyball rankings and Highland checks in at #4 in the latest rankings and to continue the season the Scotties welcomed the #5 team in the country Cowley to town on Wednesday night in KJCCC play.
At the end of the night the Scotties extended their win streak to 19-straight matches picking up their fifth win of the season in five sets improving to 5-0 in five set contests. The Scotties picked up the win 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 21-25, 15-12.
The night opened with a back and forth start to the first set and then Highland worked to an 11-8 lead and used that to hold off Cowley in set one as the Scotties worked to a 22-15 lead before take set one 25-21 with a
Cajia Allen kill to finish the set. Set two belonged to Highland also as the set was tight throughout even tied at 21-21 late and the Scotties finished the match on a 4-1 run to take set two 25-22 as
Hannah Williams finished the set with a kill.
Set three saw an 6-0 Cowley run give the Tigers a 5-11 lead but Highland tired to claw back into the set going on a 3-0 run to draw within three. That run was short lived for Highland as Cowley closed out set three on a stretch run to take it 16-25. Set four was much like set two tight throughout with multiple ties but a 4-0 at the end of the match by Cowley gave them the set 21-25.
On to a fifth and decisive set the match went and the Scotties who have been strong in fifth sets this season were once again strong this time. After the teams traded tallies to open the set the Scotties posted back-to-back points to lead 8-6 and then went up 13-7 in the match. Cowley attempted a comeback but the Scotties used an error by Cowley to finish the fifth set 15-12 and take the match.
Highland got plenty of strong performances all-around to earn the win with contributions coming from everywhere. Williams was strong up front in the middle leading the team in kills with 15, while
Emma Cohalla added 14 kills.
Cajia Allen and
Myla Turner led the team on the defensive end with 19 digs each. For Allen the 19 digs is a new career high and she added eight kills and pair of assists.
Hannah Wagner and
Lee Sexton each recorded seven kills, while
Katie Pearson totaled 42 assists and added 12 digs for a double-double, while also posting three aces.
Amber Hildebrand and
Kirsten Johnson each tallied eight and seven digs also in the win.
The victory moves the Scotties to 29-2 on the season and 5-1 in KJCCC play and keeps the teams hopes of hosting Districts alive, while stretching their school record win streak to 19-straight matches. Highland hits the court next on the road at KCKCC next week in KJCCC play on Wednesday, October 17
