Box Score The 32nd win of the season and 22-straight win didn't come easy as the Highland volleyball team had all they could handle facing Neosho County for the second time this season and needed five sets to earn the win on Sophomore night.
Scotties after falling in set one battle back to take the match in five sets improving to 6-0 in five set matches by winning 17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 15-8.
Set one was a tight affair as much of the night would be in all the sets. After going back and forth most of the set Highland led 13-12 only to see Neosho go up 17-15 forcing a Highland timeout. The Panthers once establishing the lead held Highland off and stretched the lead out with a late run to take the first set 17-25.
In set two Neosho took the early lead despite a skull crushing hit by
Cajia Allen and the Scotties trailed 12-8 early. Back-to-back kills by
Lee Sexton tied the set for Highland at 17-17 and then swung the lead into their favor on the next point. Scotties pushed their lead to 22-18 and worked to set point off a
Myla Turner ace, ultimately finishing set two off winning it 25-20.
After a 7-2 start to set three the Scotties looked to be in the drive seat but Neosho went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 9-9. A tie remained the trend in the set for a good portion of the action was it was tied late and the Scotties went up 24-23 with set point in their favor but it would ultimately take four tries to win the third set as Sexton finish it off with a kill to give the Scotties the set three win 28-26.
Set four just like the rest of the evening saw plenty of ties during the set but a late push by Neosho gave the Panthers some room to work with and earned them the set four win 20-25.
On to the fifth set the contest went and the Scotties came out hot with big kills by
Hannah Williams, Allen and Sexton to lead 4-0 early. Up 8-5 the teams switch sides of the court and the Scotties added to their lead going on to snag the win with a 15-8 set five.
In the win over Neosho the Scotties put together some eye popping numbers setting new season highs for kills with 73, assists with 69 and digs with 92 as a team. While the team now ranks fourth in a single season in team assists and fifth in a single season in team digs. The four sophomores helped pace the team on the night in the win.
Emma Cohalla tallied 21 kills her 23 match with double figure kills this season, while
Katie Pearson notched her 18 double-double with 58 assists and 14 digs.
Kirsten Johnson tallied 13 digs for her 34th match in her career with double figure digs, while
Hannah Williams had five kills, a dig and two blocks.
Allen had her 11th double-double of the season with a career high 17 kills and also 14 digs, while
Myla Turner notched her seventh 20+ dig performance with 25 digs.
Amber Hildebrand added 14 digs and
Hannah Wagner tallied her fourth double figure kill showing of the year finishing with 10 kills.
Individually on the night several Scotties moved into the Top five all-time in school history in single season and career marks. Cohalla now ranks fourth in school history in single season kills, while Turner ranks fourth in single season digs and Pearson now ranks third in career digs.
Highland now is set for a #3 versus #1 battle on Tuesday, October 3rd against Coffeyville at Ben Allen Fieldhouse at 5:30pm in a match that has District implications and a KJCCC East League title up for grabs.
