Box Score For the second straight year in the regular season finale the Highland volleyball team had plenty to play for and faced off with a Top 10 team in the Nation with plenty riding on the contest.
This year the Scotties squared off with #1 Coffeyville after the match earlier this season was deemed to be replayed after a net issue the first time and like last year the Scotties earned a big regular season finale win topping Coffeyville in three sets just like they beat Cowley last year in three sets. This year the win not only gives Highland the ability to host Districts but also earned the volleyball program their first KJCCC East championship since 1996 as they are co-champs with Coffeyville each finishing with a 9-1 League record.
After a 2-0 start to the night by Coffeyville the Scotties mounted a 4-0 run by the hands of
Lee Sexton who had several big plays early and the lead continued to expand over the course of the first set for Highland. Scotties worked to a 16-9 advantage when Coffeyville used their second timeout of the match and out of the timeout Highland continued to roll. Everyone made plays down the stretch of set one as
Hannah Wagner had a big kill,
Myla Turner came up with an ace, while their was even a skull crushing block by the Scotties. Ultimately Highland took advantage of Coffeyville mistakes and won set one 25-12.
A
Hannah Williams kill opened set two but Coffeyville answered with a 4-0 run and went up 8-3 early in the set. The Scotties answered the bell rattling off five straight points to tie the set at 8-8 and then swung the lead to their favor on a
Emma Cohalla kill. The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the set trading points until Coffeyville went up 24-23 and had set point but the Scotties staved off the set point and the set went to extra points and Highland grabbed the set win 27-25.
Scotties opened set three leading 5-1 but Coffeyville didn't go away pushing right back and went on a 6-0 run to knotted the set up at 20-20. After a 21-21 tie a Sexton block gave Highland a two-point lead and then the Scotties took the next tally to set up match point which Highland won taking set three 25-22 and winning the match in three sets.
Cohalla led the team with 13 kills, while Sexton finished with eight kills in the win. Pearson recorded her 20th double-double finishing with 29 assists and 17 digs, while Turner and
Kirsten Johnson were strong defensively posting 15 and 13 digs, respectively in the win. The Scotties as a team moved to third all-time in a single season in school history in team kills and digs with their performance, while also moving to second all-time in a single season in team assists. Individually Cohalla moved to fourth in all-time career kills and Turner moved to third in a single season in digs.
The three sets victory over Coffeyville moves Highland to 34-2 on the season and 9-1 in KJCCC play improving the team's school record win streak to 24-straight matches. The Scotties also snapped a seven match losing streak to Coffeyville and snapped the Red Ravens 26-match KJCCC win streak and earned a KJCCC East title.
Scotties now turn their attention to the District tournament which is set for Saturday, November 3rd and will be hosted at Highland with the action starting at 4:00pm (all the matches will be streamed on the Scottie Sports Network).
