Softball sweeps first round of District D Tournament

Highland, KS – The Highland Softball team eased their way through the first round of the Region VI, District D Tournament as they defeated Independence Community College 16-0 (5-innings) and 13-3 (5-innings) Saturday afternoon on Sophomore Day.
 
The Scotties are now 10-0 in best of 3 series in the opening round of playoffs under Coach Heidi and Scott Jordan.
 
Game 1 – Highland 16-0 (5-innings)
 
Highland silenced the Pirates early scoring 10 runs in the first inning. They tacked on six more in the second, ending their scoring in the game but would be enough to get the run-rule after five innings of play.
 
Raegen Hamm got win number 17 on the season pitching 4 innings allowing no runs off one hit. She struck out eight and walked one. Kelly Uthe got back inside the circle after a few weeks to finish out the bout pitching the final inning striking out one and allowing no runs off one hit.
 
The Scotties lit it up on the offensive end scoring 16 runs in two innings. Aubry Hernandez went 2-4 with a double and a grand slam. She finished with five RBI's in the game and one run scored. Sydney Anderson went 1-2 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Sydney was also walked in game one, setting a new single season record for walks, she now has 31 walks this season.
 
Sam Moran, Kendra Baldridge and Alyssa Wesley all finished with two RBI's a piece in the game and Alexis Hodapp added one. The Scotties walked four times and only struck out once.
 
 
Game Two- Highland 13-3 (5-innings)
 
Game two saw the Pirates jump out to a 2-0 lead after the first half inning, their first runs of the day. Highland answered and wouldn't look back scoring two in the first, five in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and finished it off with an Alexis Hodapp walk-off three run homerun to end it in a run-rule 13-3.
 
Highland hit four homeruns in the game, two from Alexis Hodapp and one each from Aubry Hernandez and Sydney Anderson.
 
**This is the 10th game in a row that Highland has hit a homerun**
 
Hodapp finished 2-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Both Anderson and Hernandez chipped in three RBI's in the contest. Hernandez leads the KJCCC Div. II in RBI's and Homeruns with 60 RBI's this season and 15 homeruns while Anderson is sitting in second in RBI's in the KJCCC Div. II at 58 RBI's and fourth in homeruns at 11.
 
Sam Moran, Kendra Baldridge and Kelly Uthe also knocked one RBI each in the game.
 
Julisa Ortega got the win for Highland pitching 4.1 innings allowing three runs, one earned, off five hits. She walked one and struck out six. Haley Donaldson closed out the final two outs of the game striking out one and allowing one hit.
 
**Highland finished with 22 hits on the day giving them over 400 hits this season, now at 408. Highland pitchers struck out 15 Pirate batters on the day giving Highland over 200 strikeouts this season, now at 205**
 
The Scotties have now defeated the Pirates 13 straight times and are on a seven-game win streak to improve to 32-7 overall on the season.
 
Highland advances to the Region VI District D Tournament in Topeka, KS this coming Saturday and Sunday at Hummer Park. They will take on Neosho County CC Saturday at 10:00am on the south field and will play again at 2:00pm, opponent will be determined after the first game.
