Scottie Volleyball Finishes Strong to Win Road Matchup With Cloud County

Box Score The ninth ranked Scottie volleyball team headed out on the road on Wednesday night looking for their first Jayhawk Conference win of the season and picked it up with a four set win over Cloud County winning 25-22, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15.

Highland fell down early in set one going down by four at 7-3 but hanging close and to the lead for the first time in the match at 15-14 and worked to an 18-14 lead by putting together a 6-0 run. The Scotties worked the lead to five at 22-17 when Cloud County called a time and the Thunderbirds than went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 22-22. Cajia Allen came up with a big kill for the 23rd points of the set and the Scotties snagged set one 25-22.

Set two was much different than the first as the Scotties took the lead early in the set and continued to establish and add to the lead throughout the set. While Cloud County hung close it was a Hannah Williams kill off the face of a Cloud County player that sparked the Scotties push to seal the set two win as Highland led 15-12 at that point and finished the set on a 10-2 run winning set two 25-14.

Set three went the way of the home in Cloud County as they doubled up the Scotties 8-4 early in the set and held Highland at bay throughout the set despite the Scotties attempting runs and Cloud County nabbed set three 19-25.

Highland rekindled their performance from set two in set four to finish off the match as the Scotties took the early lead on a Katie Pearson ace and then gradually worked the lead to nine at 19-10 on a Savannah Griesemer kill. The lead grew to double figures and finished with the Scotties taking the set 25-15 and winning the match.

Balance was on display again by Highland in many facets of the game in the road win over Cloud County. Allen led the way with 12 kills and added seven digs and three aces, while Lee Sexton tallied nine kills along with five block assists. Williams and Emma Cohalla added six and five kills each, while Williams had five block assists and Cohalla had three blocks on the night. Pearson recorded 27 assists and eight digs, while Myla Turner chipped in 11 digs to lead the defense.

Coach Jon Bingesser talked about the team's performance in the win on the road, "I'm just really impressed with our mental maturity in that fourth set. With a team like them they can come back and beat you at any second. The fact that we were able to stay controlled, stay poised and build a 10-point lead and them cruise from there, that showed a lot about our team."

The win moves the Scotties to 12-2 on the season overall and 1-1 in KJCCC play. Highland hits the court again on Friday, September 14th when they host Allen CC and Benedictine College JV for a triangular with the Scotties playing at 3:00 and 7:00pm.
