Box Score The #14 Highland Volleyball team earned their 10th sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) over the Southeast Storm last night. A triangular with the Storm and the Hesston Larks was originally scheduled, but due to health and safety protocols within the Hesston volleyball team they were unable to participate.
The loss of the match could potentially become an issue for the Scotties in conference standings as they now have missed out on two potential conference wins. The team is currently in second place in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) standings at 11-4, while Neosho County is third at 11-6. Each team has three conference matches left, one of which is with each other next Monday in the Ben Allen Field House. If the Scotties can secure victories in their final matches they can guarantee second place and earn the right to host a district tournament.
The Scotties have now won their last three matches after dropping a heartbreaker at Neosho County in five sets on March 15. The Scotties started their recent streak with a five set victory over Cowley on March 18 in Arkansas City. The Scotties took the first set easy and were set to cruise set two as well securing a lead at 24-21. Cowley wasn't ready to quit as they rallied back and took the set 30-28. Cowley used that momentum as they took set three from the Scotties building their set lead to 2-1. The tigers were in control of the Scotties throughout set 4, eventually earning match point at 24-21. It looked as if the tigers were about to pull off the upset, before a kill from Freshman,
Jenna Pfau gave the Scotties some life. After a Cowley hitting error, a tiger time-out was called at 23-24. A kill from Sophomore,
Nicole Franco would tie the set at 24 apiece, but two Cowley errors would give the Scotties the victory forcing a 5
th and final set. The tigers looked to bury the Scotties with a 10 – 7 lead. The Scotties battled back but eventually saw the lead go to the tigers at 13-10. Two kills from Franco and back-to-back blocks from Sophomore,
Gabbie Bishop and Freshman,
Simone Kohl would give the Scotties match point at 14-13. Another Franco kill would end the match and secure victory for the Scotties.
Nicole Franco went on to the have a record-breaking performance earning herself 32 kills, the most of any player in a single match in Highland program history.
The Scotties are back in action this Saturday at 4 p.m. as they take on the Red Devils of Allen County in Iola, KS. They return home on Monday for a must-win match versus Neosho County at 6:30 p.m. in the Ben Allen Field House.
