HIGHLAND, Kan. - Cali Honeyman turned in a dominant offensive performance for Highland (24-5, 4-3 KJCCC), posting 18 kills and three block assists to power the Scotties to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) win over Coffeyville (12-20, 1-5 KJCCC) on Wednesday night.
Although the Red Ravens were able to collect the first point of the match on Highland's serve, they handed the ball back to the Scotties immediately with a service error.
Jaala Stewart served the Scotties to eight straight points, with kills by
Harlee Blackwell bookending the run.
After a service error from Highland put the ball back on the Coffeyville side, a pair of uncharacteristic receive errors from the Scotties allowed the visitors to close the gap to 18-14, but a pair of Honeyman kills restored a five-point lead at 20-15 as HCC pulled away with Stewart dropping a service ace for the winner.
THe opening points of the second set were more back-and-forth than in the first set, but a six-point run by Highland shifted the momentum fully in favor of the Scotties, as
Gracie Klecan answered a Coffeyville timeout with a dominating service ace.
A quick kill by setter
Rylee Seelhoff put Highland up double digits in the second set as she spotted a hole in the Coffeyville defense to give HCC an 18-8 advantage. The Scotties allowed just three points to Coffeyville en route to a 2-0 match lead.
Highland controlled the bulk of the third set and was on the cusp of closing out the match after back-to-back kills by Honeyman put the Scotties up 24-15. Coffeyville gave one last desperation push, with Prayer Roebuck and Mellina Majeri collecting a block on Honeyman.
The Scotties finally converted on the fourth match point opportunity, with
Hallie Holthaus setting a perfect ball to Honeyman for the kill.
Highland takes a brief break from conference action on Friday, hosting Southwestern Community College. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
