Brown Mackie College, 9-12 overall and 0-4 in Region play, hung with the No. 4 team in the NJCAA Division II for three out of four quarters on Saturday afternoon. A big third quarter for the Scotties would help lift them to a 69-53 win over the Lions, win number 19 on the season for Highland.
It was a close first half as both teams struggled to keep control of the ball. Highland gave up 10 turnovers in the first half and the Lions gave up 15. The Lions shot 4-9 from behind the arc and hit one with .21 second left in the 2
nd quarter to keep their deficit to only two at the half.
Highland came out firing in the third, as they knocked down four three-point shots and scored 26 points in the quarter to take a 52-36 lead into the final 10 minutes. A 17-17 final quarter would not be enough for the Lions as Highland went on to get the road win 69-53.
Mariane Carvalho led Highland in scoring with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Jameka Dowell finished with 13 points, four boards, four assists and three steals while
Sidney Blackburn added in 12 points and three rebounds. The Scotties recorded 14 steals off of 20 Brown Mackie turnovers and finished scoring 24 points off turnovers.
The Scotties are now 19-2 overall and 3-1 in Region VI play. They head to Fort Scott on Wednesday, February 1
st to take on the Greyhounds at 5:30pm.
