Box Score 4 The #15 Highland Volleyball team traveled to yet another weekend tournament to take on four teams they had yet to see this season at the DMACC Tournament. The Scotties were set to face North Dakota State College of Science, #19 Waubonsee CC, #14 Kirkwood CC, and Des Moines Area CC. The tough schedule left the Scotties un phased as they swept NDSCS and Waubonsee both on Friday. "I was really proud of the girls this weekend. I thought for as tough as the competition was, we really did a nice job of staying focused and continuing to play at a high level. I was excited to watch us take care of business against #19 Waubonsee. Everyone played their best and it was fun to watch," commented head coach Jon Bingesser.
"The next day was a little tougher. Kirkwood played a great match against us but we never really got anything started either. We had some uncharacteristic errors assisting them that ended up costing us those close sets. The way we rebounded and took care of DMACC was the highlight of the tournament. Everyone played exceptionally well and because our defense was so on, we were able to focus on our offense and it was nice to see plays executed like that. DMACC is a good team with a great program and I hope the girls realize what a big deal a 3-0 sweep of them is. It's just what we needed going into another tough week." Kirkwood gave Highland their only loss of the weekend with a record of 3-1.
After going 3-0 in three of their games this weekend, the Scotties have now won 17 of their 29 games in three sets. The whole team contributed in their role this weekend led by sophomores Leslie Polanco and Zealia Kleitz. Polanco recorded 49 kills and 50 digs on the weekend and Kleitz put down 43 kills with an impressive .357 and 16 blocks. Setter Katie Pearson continued to be reliable with 130 assists and 19 digs. Kirsten Johnson came up with 52 digs on the weekend and Emma Cohalla help with 7 blocks.
The Scotties face another conference match-up on Wednesday, October 11th at #20 Neosho CC with the first serve at 6:30pm.
