The #8 Highland Women's basketball team finished out their regular season games with a win over #15 Labette Cards on Wednesday evening: 68-63.
While both teams were slow to get points on the board early in the 1st quarter, Highland slowly started to gain control heading into the 2nd quarter 17-9. Dey'Chelle Claiborne put up 7 points in the 2nd quarter and Mariane Carvalho and Jameka Dowell each led throughout the first half with 12 and 8 points each. Labette scored 19 points in the 2nd quarter and pulled down 24 rebounds to the Scotties 23 making the halftime score 39-28 with HCC in the lead.
The Cards took charge in throughout the 3rd quarter outscoring the Scotties 18-13 closing the gap at the end of the 3rd quarter 52-46, HCC still in the lead. The 4th quarter was a battle between both ranked teams. Carvalho lays in a layup and Dowell puts in two free throws and a jump shot securing the win 68-63.
Carvahlo led the way with 23 points and 5 rebounds and Dowell was right behind her with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Niccolly Ramalho pulled down 10 rebounds for the Scotties.
With this win, Dowell has earned her spot has #1 in career free throws made with 222 here at Highland CC. Szonja Vukov keeps adding to her totals with 374 career field goals made, 200 career steals, and 958 career points, all placing her at the #1 spot all-time here at Highland.
The Scotties placed 2nd in the Region VI standings and received a 1st round bye. They will host the winner of Brown Mackie vs. Fort Scott CC on Monday, March 6th at 5:30PM in Ben Allen Field House.
