Scotties advance to championship game for 1st time since 2011

The No. 1 seeded Highland Scotties have made their way to the Region VI, Division II Championship game after a 70-66 win over Brown Mackie College Monday night.

The Scotties, in front of a packed Ben Allen Field House, did just enough to get the win and advance to the championship game after shooting only 32% from the floor.

Highland scrapped their way to a four-point 36-32 lead to take into the locker room. KJCCC MVP and Freshman of the Year Stephon Jackson, knocked down two early threes giving Highland a spark early. Those would be his only two threes of the night as he finished with 14 points.

The Scotties would take a 14-point lead with seven minutes remaining but the Lions, who are playing their final season as a college, had no plans on folding. They fought back and cut the lead to two with :13 seconds left on the clock.

Stephon Jackson was fouled on the inbounds pass and would go on to make two free throws, giving Highland a four-point 70-66 lead with :11 seconds left. Brown Mackie would throw up a desperation three that would miss and Highland walked away with the victory 70-66.

Dontre English & Stephon Jackson led the charge offensively for Highland. English finished with 16 points and six rebounds while Jackson put up 14 points. Leland Harvey had a big night scoring 10 points and pulling down four boards. Kamaal Davis scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds. Andre Jackson was a machine on the glass finishing with 14 rebounds, nine of which were on the offensive side.

Highland out rebounded the Lions 45-36 and forced 14 turnovers with nine steals. The Scotties won the game at the free throw line going 17-22, 77%.

With the win, Highland advances to their first Region VI Division II Championship game since 2011 where they defeated Johnson County 91-85. The Scotties have defeated the Cavaliers in both matchups during the regular season and will look to make it a third, Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm in Hartman Arena in Park City, KS.

Games will be streamed live on Scottie TV and live stats will be available courtesy of Region VI.
