Box Score 2 Highland softball team traveled north to Council Bluffs, Iowa on Tuesday and were in action against Iowa Western in a non-conference doubleheader.
Scotties after struggling offensively in game one took a 2-0 loss but bounced back and won game two 9-0 in six innings for the split. The split moves Highland to 17-7 on the season.
Ultimately both games on the day didn't feature a great amount of offense but Iowa Western got enough against the Scotties in game one for the 2-0 win. Iowa Western took the lead with a run in the second and then added another in the fourth and did that on six total hits in the game. Scotties had some base runners but struggled with only two hits, while drawing four walks in the loss.
Isabella Konieczka led the Scotties at the plate as she was 2-2 with two walks, while inside the circle
Bailey Lacy tossed a strong game in the loss working six innings giving up just two runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out three.
Game two it was a stalemate through five innings despite the Scotties having some scoring opportunities but in the sixth inning Highland's offense finally broke through for the day. After a leadoff walk by
Sara Shinn, it was
Lora Shinn to follow with an RBI double to get the Scotties on the board. Scotties tacked on more with an RBI double by
Sirena Salazar, along with an RBI singles by Konieczka and
Chevelle Sartin. The scoring in the top of the sixth was capped by a
Sara Shinn three-run homer and then the Scotties set Iowa Western down in order in the bottom of the sixth to take the 9-0 six inning win.
Both Salazar and
Allyssa Griggs each had a pair of hits in game two each recording a double, while
Sara Shinn was 1-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk.
Kelly Uthe was inside the circle and tossed six shutout innings giving up just three hits and one walk, while striking out three.
Highland continues the season with more KJCCC action on Thursday, April 4
th at home against Coffeyville in a doubleheader slated to start at 2:00pm. While then traveling to Arkansas City, KS on Saturday, April 6
th to take on Cowley in a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.
