Highland Baseball Finishes Series with Fort Scott on a High Note

After dropping the first three games of their series with the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds. The Scottie Baseball team found itself yet again in a battle during Game 4. A quality start from right-hander Dylan Weaver, as well as quality bullpen outings from Austin Gottula, Nathan Virgin and Cristian Quero helped secure the victory for Highland.

"With the wind blowing all day and the weather being as warm as it has been it was a tough day to pitch today. Any mistakes made by pitchers were taken advantage of by both teams and I am proud of the way our guys battled today to finish this series off with a win," said Head Coach Landon Hay after the game 4 victory.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Scotties got solid contributions from Jason Dudzik, Jhors Gomez, and Lander Suarez. However, what proved to be the difference in game four came in the bottom of the 8th as Highland was down 10-9 and was able to load the bases after leadoff hitter Justin Carinci being hit by a pitch, Jhors Gomez walked and Lander Suarez coming up with a big two-strike hit to score one run to tie the game. Jake Bucovetsky then drew a walk to load the bases, followed by another bases-loaded walk to Jorge Burgos which allowed Highland to take the lead. Gustavo Nava then pinch-hit and drew yet another bases-loaded walk to score the Scotties 12th and final run which would prove to be enough to seal the victory as right-handed relief pitcher Cristian Quero entered in the 9th to get the save for Highland! After the game coach Hay had the following to say about the victory, "We have preached all year that sometimes to get things going in the right direction you have to just expect some great things to happen to us. It isn't the prettiest way to win a ballgame but we will certainly take it!"

Highland will host Coffeyville Community College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 6 to complete the 4 game series with them before welcoming the Cavaliers of Johnson County Community College to Highland Community Ball Park on Friday, April 9 (originally set for April 8 but moved due to impending weather). Both doubleheaders are slated for a 1 p.m. start. Stay tuned to www.scottieathletics.com for updates as they occur!
