Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highland Women Fall to No. 1 Johnson County in the Second Round of the Regional Tournament

For the third time in 30 days, the Highland Women's Basketball team faced off against the undefeated, #1 ranked Johnson County Community College. JCCC won the third and final meeting of the year 80-41 over the Scotties as they advance to the Conference Championship.

GG Smith was the only Scottie in double digits for the Johnson County game, scoring 11 points and adding 15 rebounds for the evening. Smith had a strong year, leading the Scotties in rebounds and steals while averaging 9.9 points per game.

Season scoring leader, Marina Paes, finished the evening with 9 points. The Scotties, as a whole, struggled in shooting against the Cavaliers, shooting .278 percent on the evening.

Head Coach Jordon O'brien said, "Johnson County is a very talented team with a deep bench. We did a good job in the first quarter defensively, but we really struggled the whole game with putting the ball in the basket. We would make strong defensive plays, but couldn't capitalize on those stops by scoring on the offensive end. That momentum just never shifted our way."

The Scotties struggled at times this year with injuries and COVID-19 protocols, but O'Brien has done a great job of carving out her own identity in only her first year with the Scotties. O'Brien and Assistant Coach Lydia Harvey have been diligently working to fill next year's roster with even more talent for the 2021-22 campaign.

On the future of the Scotties, O'Brien added, "After having a transition year, I am excited to bring in a large and talented recruiting class. I am most looking forward to our depth and ability to shoot the ball. Putting the ball in the hoop from the 3-point line was something that plagued us this whole season. Returning a couple of key pieces with our current freshmen will help with stability and experience as well. A strong, talented recruiting class coupled with our returner's work ethic will be a good combination for our program moving forward."
