The Highland Softball team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in Oxford, AL. The #5 seed Scotties will play the #12 seed St. Louis Community College on Tuesday, May 25 at 2 p.m.
The Scotties are headed into Alabama with a lot of momentum, coming off their 5
th Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Championship, the most by any sport at HCC. This is also their 8
th Region title and their 8
th trip to the NJCAA Tournament in the last 11 years.
Highland's softball team broke quite a few records this season, both individually and as a team. Here's a quick look at their impressive list of accomplishments from this season:
Team Records:
- Most Runs scored in a single game: def Southwestern Iowa 29-18.
- Most KJCCC wins in a season 26-4, the old record was 23-3.
- Most runs scored in a season 461, the old record was 455.
Individual Records:
- Hits in a single game: 5 - tie 1st Cheyenne Minnick versus Southwestern Iowa.
- Runs scored in a single game: 6 - tie 1st Cheyenne Minnick versus Southwestern Iowa.
- Most hits in a season: 86 -1st Gabby Schultz, the old record was 79.
- Most walks in a season: 34 – 1st Cheyenne Minnick, old record was 33
The KJCCC All-Conference Teams will be released on Friday, and there figures to be several Scotties filling out multiple positions on the list of awards. The biggest question being, will
Lilli Weir be named the Most Valuable Player of the conference?
Weir ranks 3
rd all-time in strikeouts for the Scotties (189), with 10.14 strikeouts per game. She currently ranks in a five-way tie for 8
th place in all-time wins for the Scotties. With a successful showing at the NJCAA tournament, she could finish as high as 6
th on the all-time list.
