Highland Football Drops Conference Battle on the Road

The Highland Scotties dropped their fourth consecutive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference match to Butler on Saturday, 34-7.

The Scotties outpaced the Grizzlies in total yardage (416-380), but only managed to find the end zone once on 43-yard Quinn Buessing pass to Cam McKinney with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter. Buessing also threw three interceptions in the contest.

Buessing continues to lead the KJCCC in passing, and three of Highland's wide receivers (Deontay Campbell, Cam McKinney, and Raequan Prince) rank among the top 6 receivers in the conference for receiving yards. While the Highland passing game has found momentum, the running game continues to struggle, only amassing 25 yards on 25 rushing attempts against Butler. The Scotties have gained 1,090 yards through the air this season, and only 132 yards on the ground.

Butler broke out to an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Scotties could never find a rhythm offensively. Highland did manage to outscore Butler 7-6 over the course of the second half.

"We have a Jekyll and Hyde thing going defensively.  When we do the things we are coached to do, we fit the run properly and we break on throws consistently. When we don't, it's like trying to untie a balloon knot with ski gloves on. I am proud of their effort and their fight, we had a minute in the fourth where our guys felt we had Butler beat and we were still down 28-7", said Highland Defensive Coordinator, Jake Landoll.

The Scotties head to Hutchison, KS this weekend to meet the #1 ranked Hutchison Blue Dragons on Sunday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. Highland returns to Porter Family Stadium on May 23 at 1:00 p.m. for the final contest of the 2021 Spring season to face Dodge City. Tune into the Scottie Sports Network to catch both games and support your Scotties!
