Highland Community College fell 65-20 to Coffeyville Community College in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matchup on Saturday night in Coffeyville.
The Red Ravens came out strong and fast, scoring 28 points before the Scotties could counter with a score of their own. That initial score came from
Andrew Burnette scampering 89 yards down the left side of the field, fighting off defenders for the last 20 yards of the run to reach the endzone. Burnette's run places him 3
rd in the record books for the longest run from scrimmage in Highland Football history and the longest run from scrimmage for the Scotties since 2015. Burnette finished the day with 112 yards on 14 carries.
As the first half drew to a close, Highland started a 7-play drive that moved the ball 60 yards in just 1:42 and culminated with
Darrias Pearsall passing to
Deontay Campbell for a 24-yard touchdown with just seven seconds remaining in the half. That score cut Coffeyville's lead to 28-14 as they headed to the break.
Unfortunately for Highland, the second half started much like the first half. Coffeyville scored 23 points in the third quarter and added another touchdown in the fourth before Highland could break the Red Raven's 30-point scoring run to open the second half.
Highland's final offensive push of the evening came as
Ty-Kei Hines scored on a 7-yard run with 9:55 remaining in the game. Coffeyville scored once more to bring the final score to 65-20 over the Scotties.
Jalen Angelle, coming off a NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week performance versus Garden City, added 11 total tackles to his NJCAA leading 40 tackles for the year.
Warren Peeples also added a sack to his NJCAA leading 5 QB Sacks.
Defensive Coordinator
Jake Landoll added, "Coffeyville is a well-coached team. Defensively we didn't play assignment football, we tackled poorly and they don't go down easy. We had a few injuries and lost a key guy in the secondary first play of the game. Our young guys have to be ready to step in for longer periods and play more consistently. We talked last week about consistency and the only constant was that we were inconsistent. We will get better, we have too".
The Scotties are on the road this weekend to face Independence with kickoff scheduled for 1pm. Watch Live links are provided on the Football Schedule page at Scottieathletics.com.
