Game Recap: Baseball |

Scotties Dominate Larks 13-4

The Highland Baseball team came into Monday's non-conference match-up with Hesston 9-27 on the year, reeling from a tough weekend series vs. Jayhawk Conference powerhouse Johnson County. The Scotties faced a tough mid-week opponent in the Larks of Hesston College, who entered Monday's game with an overall record of 23-10. Highland's offense exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits and came away with the 13-4 win over Hesston.

"It has been a tough two week stretch for us facing Cowley and Johnson County back to back" said Head Coach Landon Hay, "getting to come right back out and compete against a good Hesston team was a great opportunity for us and I am thrilled that our guys took advantage of the opportunity and competed hard for a win."

The offensive explosion was led by several Scotties recording multiple hits and RBIs in the contest.  Freshman Maverick Rockers recorded 3 hits, 1 of which being a 2 RBI single in the 2nd inning that along with a solo home run by sophomore Filip Sarota in the bottom of the first inning allowed Highland to jump out to a 3-0 lead over Hesston.

The Larks rallied in the top of the 3rd with two runs of their own and then tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the 4th inning on a wild pitch. Highland took the momentum right back in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single from sophomore, Caleb Roofe, part of a 4 for 5, 2 RBI performance for him on the day.

Highland went on to blow the game open with a 3 RBI double from freshman shortstop, Kyle McConachie making the score 8-3. The Scotties would go on to score 5 more runs in the contest with RBI singles from Roofe, Rockers, and freshman outfielder Zach Knowlton. Highland also recorded a combined 7 stolen bases versus Hesston.

Highland got a quality start off the mound from freshman Carter Poole who went 3.2 innings, surrendering only 3 runs on 3 hits and collecting 8 strikeouts. Colton Minks, Nick Brubeck, Tucker Russell, Dylan Graw, and Kyle Snyder would combine to keep the Larks at bay the remainder of the game and seal the victory for the Scotties. The Scottie Bullpen combined to give up only 1 run on 3 hits walking just 1 Hesston batter and striking out 8.

The Scotties return to Highland Community Ballpark on Thursday, April 13th for a KJCCC match up with the Cardinals of Labette Community College. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
