Six student-athletes competed at the NJCAA National Outdoor Championships, which were postponed twice due to lightning in Hobbs, New Mexico, from May 18 to 20. Events were moved back two days, prelims were eliminated and multi-heat finals were used for the meet.
Scotties delivered an All-American effort for the women's team. Dayjahney Hibbert finished third, was named All-American, and set a new school mark in the high jump with a height of 5'8.11"/1.73 m. After a brief period of difficulty, she blasted two heights higher than she had ever done before. With a leap of 11.59 meters. Dayjahney also finished 11th in the triple jump. Alexis O'Farrell threw 35.22 meters in javelin for twelfth place as a freshman.
Personal bests were achieved by the Scottie men's track and field team. For 10th place, Andwele Shurland cleared 14' 4.44"/4.38 m. Despite his injury, he persevered and finished in the top 10 in the country.
Coach Kathy Graham had a few comments following her first year at Highland, "Overall, the team had good focus and teamwork laying the foundation of what HCC will be known for in the future. We want to be known for our student-athletes who can handle pressure, look out for each other and execute fundamentals at the highest level."
