MARYVILLE, Mo. - Already with a number of national qualifier times in the book for this season, Highland delivered a statement performance at the Bearcat Invite as
Korey Mosley set a new facility record in the 60 meters on Saturday. His time of 6.56s trimmed nine-hundredths off the previous Hughes Fieldhouse record held by Central Missouri's Antonio Lay and was just one-hundredth of a second behind the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship record.
Lining up next to the current record-holder in the final heat of the preliminaries, Mosley outpaced both Lay and Allen County's Ajani Dailey and Darwin Jiminez, with Mosley (6.72s), Dailey and Jiminez (6.74s) all besting the previous meet record for the Bearcat Invite. In the finals, UCM alum Lay matched his previous venue record but was still outpaced by Mosley, who knocked .14s off his preliminaries mark.
Tierre Hamilton also locked in a top-eight finish in the 60 meters, qualifying seventh with a preliminary mark of 6.82s and moving up a spot into sixth with a time of 6.75s in the finals. Both times are above the national standard, and he currently sits in a four-way deadlock for 13th-best on the season.
Roy Miller also turned in a pair of strong performances for the Scotties in the meet, finishing second in the invite-only sections of both the 200 meters and 400 meters. In the 400, he was one of three finishers to best the previous meet record for the Bearcat Invite, putting nearly a full second between himself and the two other competitors in his heat. His time of 47.10s is the fourth-fastest in the NJCAA and eight-hundredths faster than 2024 NAIA 400 meter champion Myles Ellis, third-place finisher running unattached in the meet.
The Scotties also punched their ticket for the 4x400 relay on Saturday, with
Antonio Wallace, Miller,
Kewarny Fletcher and
Kylan Shelton turning in a time of 3:15.57, the fastest community college time in the event and third-fastest overall.
On the women's side,
Shanteria Washington posted a career-best time of 7.64s in the 60 meters to advance to the finals, and although she was unable to improve on her preliminary mark, both times were well above the NJCAA qualifying mark. She currently ranks in the top 20 in the event. Washington also finished fourth in the 200 meters, with Highland claiming three of the top eight finishers -
Alexia Lewis 2nd (25.37s),
J'Nya Demming 8th (25.81s) - in the event.
Lewis also advanced to the finals flight in the long jump but was unable to better her preliminaries mark of 5.52m, finishing fifth in the event.
The Scotties have one final tuneup meet on the schedule, as Highland travels to the Ichabod Invitational hosted by Washburn University on Feb. 14-15.
