COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - Tavian Tate scored 15 points and
Justin Burns chipped in his first career double-double (12 pts, 10 reb.) for Highland Community College (3-3), but the Scotties weren't able to complete the comeback against Iowa Western Community College (3-1) on Tuesday night, falling 66-59 to the Reivers.
After a slow start to the contest for both teams, Burns found his range at the 17-minute mark, knocking down a pair of layups followed by a triple to give the Scotties a 7-4 lead. He followed the scoring outburst with a huge block on the next IWCC possession, with HCC extending to a 14-8 lead with 12:57 left in the first half.
Highland briefly held off a pair of surges by Iowa Western, but the Reivers battled back to a 20-20 tie with 7:05 to play. After trailing 26-25 at the half, the Scotties kept IWCC within arm's reach for the bulk of the second half but weren't able to turn the corner.
Rashad Kee's layup with 4:55 to play pulled HCC within a 50-49 margin, but Iowa Western missed just one shot from the floor down the stretch.
HCC finished the night with a slight shooting edge from the floor, hitting 24-56 (.429) to a 25-69 (.362) pace for IWCC, but the Reivers made the most of their chances at the line, going 12 of 16 (.750) to a 5-18 (.278) pace for the Scotties.
The Scotties continue their Iowa road swing on Saturday, tipping off at Western Iowa Tech at 7:30 p.m.
