COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - Behind a pair of double-digit scorers and a double-digit rebounding night from
Brooklyn Pierce, Highland Community College (6-0) extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to six with a 74-49 win over Iowa Western Community College (3-2) on Tuesday night.
Jalasia Hull led the Scotties with 19 points and
Cameron McNamara added 17 in the win.
The Scotties opened with a stifling first quarter, holding the Reivers to just 4-19 shooting (1-7 from 3-pt range) in the opening 10 minutes to take a 24-9 lead. Hull had the hot hand for Highland, dropping six of eight from the floor in the opening frame.
Iowa Western controlled the opening tip and opened the scoring on its second possession, holding on to a 5-3 lead for the opening two-and-a-half minutes. Back-to-back layups by Hull and McNamara pulled HCC back in front, with Hull turning an offensive rebound and a pair of steals into an insurmountable lead by the first media timeout.
HCC held IWCC scoreless for a stretch of nearly four minutes over the first quarter, with Hull's baskets sparking a 17-2 run.
The Scotties allowed a bit of breathing room for IWCC over the next three quarters but coasted to the win. Highland finished the night shooting at a .470 clip (31-66), holding the Reivers to a .269 (18-67) pace. HCC notched its second-highest assist total on the young season, with Hull and
Jadah Kingcade with seven each of the team's 21.
Next up on the slate is a home matchup against Southeast Community College, with Highland opening the Nov. 20 doubleheader with a 5:30 tipoff against the Bobcats.
