HIGHLAND, Kan. - After a rough start to the contest, Highland Community College (5-3) found its shooting touch to coast to a 92-70 win over Kansas Christian College on Monday night.
Izyr Hester was one of five Scotties to finish the night in double figures, leading HCC with 17 points. Every player on the roster scored on the night as the Scotties hit a season-high 62.3 percent from the floor.
Through the first six minutes of the contest, HCC struggled to connect, hitting just three of their first 10 shot attempts from the floor. Highland minimized the damage with strong defense, allowing Kansas Christian just 2-of-9 shooting over the same span and forcing a pair of turnovers.
Hester launched the Scotties on a 22-0 run with a flurry of action over a 64-second span. After knocking down a pair of free throws with 13:52 on the clock, added a block that led to a fast break bucket by
Kaprice Rowan Jr. then had a pick and swish with 12:48 to play.
Emmitt Brooks finally found the basket for Kansas Christian with 8:21 to play, but
Bryan Harris and
Gavin Grubbs answered with back-to-back triples to extend HCC's lead to 35-9.
Highland managed to stretch its 23-point halftime lead as far as 34, holding a 78-44 lead with just over nine minutes to go and easily withstood a late surge by Kansas Christian.
The Scotties found the bulk of their scoring in the paint, finishing with a 56-18 edge in the category. Highland continues its three-game home stretch on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Southeast Community College.
