Honeyman, Scotties Blast Past Spartans 3-0

HIGHLAND, Kan. - With one NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball Player of the Week award under her belt, Cali Honeyman made a strong case to earn a second with a dominant performance against Southwestern Community College. The Seneca, Kan., freshman led Highland (25-5) to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-6) win over the Spartans (3-28) with 13 kills and a .750 hitting percentage.

Southwestern was able to open the match with an uncharacteristic service ace against the Scotties, as Cadence Perkins drove her serve into the net tape and over. Highland answered back with vigor, going on a pair of six-point runs and forcing the Spartans to burn a timeout.

From their 12-2 lead, the Scotties were able to easily resist a few small surges by Southwestern for the first set win.

Jaala Stewart followed a left-sided kill with a service ace to give Highland an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but the opening few points were much closer than the first set.

A successful challenge for defensive touch on a kill by Addison Martin briefly gave the Spartans a two-point swing, turning an 8-5 HCC lead into a 6-7 lead, but Danica Chamberlain squandered the momentum as her next serve went out of play and the Scotties followed a SWCC attack error with kills from Cara Elam and Stewart to extend to an 11-7 margin.

After holding off a late surge to go up 2-0 in the match, Highland reeled off a 12-1 run to open the third set. Unlike the first set, the Scotties were able to keep their foot on the accelerator, with Gracie Klecan collecting five service aces during a seven-point run that took HCC to match point.

Chamberlain and Danyelle Steinkuehler were able to briefly stave off the inevitable for the Spartans, combining for a block on HCC's first match point try, but a service error handed the win back to Highland.

The Scotties return to Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday, hosting Independence Community College. First serve for the match is set for 6 p.m., and Highland will be sporting pink jerseys in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
