OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - A double-double (23 pts, 12 reb) from
Brittany Jones and a pair of double-doubles (14 pts/13 reb v. SWCC; 19 pts/11 reb v. Iowa Lakes) by
Shamiah Johnson helped Highland (1-3) pick up a split in weekend action at the JCCC Classic. The Scotties rallied from a slow start to hand Southwestern Community College (1-1) a 53-48 loss on Friday before falling 82-45 to Iowa Lakes Community College (2-2) on Saturday.
Highland could certainly be excused for the slow start on Friday, as an unplanned encounter with a turkey delayed the team's arrival by more than an hour. And after a pre-game administrative technical foul, an opening possession three by Fantine Adgnot put Southwestern up 4-0.
Zoe Clarke executed a quick comeback for the Scotties, with assists on a pair of
Shamiah Johnson baskets bookending a jumper and a triple to put Highland back in front 9-4.
Highland extended its lead to 18-12 to end the first quarter and nearly tripled its margin by the half, holding the Spartans to just six points on a pair of three-pointers in the opening two minutes of the second quarter.
The Scotties hit a bit of a shooting slump in the second half, but Jones connected for 15 of her game-high 23 over the final two quarters to hold off Southwestern.
On Saturday, Highland was never able to find a rhythm against Iowa Lakes. After hanging close in the first quarter, the Scotties were only able to muster eight points in each of the second and third quarters.
Highland will return to the court on Jan. 5, taking on Metropolitan Community College - Kansas City. Tipoff against the Blue Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m.
