LINCOLN, Neb. - Despite a double-double (16 pts, 11 reb) by
Colton Knoll and a game-high 22 points from
Tavian Tate, Highland (8-3) wasn't able to complete the season sweep of Division I Southeast (7-5) on Saturday, falling 75-74.
The Scotties got off to a slow start in the first half, but managed to close within a 40-33 deficit at halftime.
After the intermission, Highland found its rhythm, with a
Miguel Villegas three-pointer giving the Scotties a 59-57 lead with 11:31 left in the game.
Trading the lead back and forth down the stretch, the Bobcats managed to wrestle on to the front foot, knocking down a pair of free throws to take a 75-71 lead with 2:31 on the clock.
Solid defense from the Scotties, including an offensive foul drawn with just over two minutes left, helped Tate find a wide-open triple at the 1:38 mark. After a stop and a bit of good fortune for Highland as Arthur Videira missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Bobcats responded with a stop, deflecting Tate's go-ahead three-point attempt.
Head coach
Jon Oler was able to call a timeout after an SCC miss, giving Highland a few options for the final 23.1 seconds. Unfortunately, a driving layup on the baseline by
Adriel Smith rolled around the lip of the basket before falling into a crowd in the lane.
Takeo Moore was able to secure the rebound and extend through contact for a putback attempt, but it was just off the mark.
Highland returns home on Tuesday for another rematch, this time hosting North Central Missouri College. Tipoff for the game is set for 7 p.m.
