HIGHLAND, Kan. - Opening the home portion of its schedule after battling to a strong 0-0 draw, Highland (0-1-1) pressed strong in the second half but was unable to find an equalizer against State Fair Community College (1-0-0), falling 1-0 on Saturday.
State Fair opened the match with the better of the offensive pressure, forcing
McKenna Glade into three saves in the opening 20 minutes. The Roadrunners finally struck in the 23rd minute, after Melania Aguirre's shot was saved by an HCC defender but fell to the feet of Ella Smith.
Highland came close to finding net in the waning moments of the first half, as
Della Arnold found herself open at the top of the box, but her shot was saved by Valeria Morales.
The Scotties roared out to start the second half, forcing three saves by Morales before the hour mark. Highland was also able to maintain the bulk of the possession, not allowing SFCC to record a shot until the 88th minute, but couldn't find a way past Morales.
HCC has a short turnaround for its next match, facing College of Saint Mary in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
