HIGHLAND, Kan. - Paige Carrier struck for the first goal of the season for Highland (0-1-2), but it wasn't enough as College of Saint Mary (JV) found a second-half equalizer in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The Scotties came out briskly, with Carrier nearly scoring in the opening minute.
Jamie Seehusen sent a low cross into the center of the field and Carrier was able to collect the half-clearance and force Saydi Headley to push the shot over the crossbar.
HCC earned another corner kick in the third minute, and
Valerie Salazar teed Carrier up perfectly for the opening strike.
Highland maintained solid pressure through the rest of the half, forcing Headley into eight saves in the opening 45 minutes, but unfortunately HCC wasn't able to extend its lead.
Rianne Shaffer-Byers nearly found net for Highland in the second half, as she hit a solid right-footed shot in the 54th minute that forced a brief bobble by Headley before collecting the save.
Aside from a pair of corner kicks, the Flames hadn't presented much danger in the way of a possible equalizer, but found one in the 73rd minute well against the run of play. Highland was whistled for a foul deep in CSM's defensive third, but Emma Gallagher was able to take advantage of another CSM player in an offside position but not interfering to time a run and collect a booming pass from Yulianna Corazon.
Gallagher was able to poke the ball far post, just past the outstretched arms of
Abbie Beeler.
Beeler came up huge for the Scotties moments later, however, as CSM drew a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Beeler was able to read the effort by Corazon perfectly and make the stop.
She added another stop in the 90th minute to preserve the draw for Highland.
The Scotties hit the road for a Tuesday contest against Central Community College. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
