Scotties Defend Ben Allen Field House Against Vikings With 3-0 Sweep

HIGHLAND, Kan. - Cali Honeyman blistered 17 kills with a .342 hitting percentage and finished one dig shy of a double-double as Highland (5-0) swept past Missouri Valley College (JV) 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) on Wednesday night.

Jaala Stewart put Highland up 6-1 to start the first set with a strong presence at the service line, forcing a ball handling error followed by back-to-back service aces.

The teams swapped points for the next four rallies before the Scotties opened up another big run with four consecutive points from the service line. MVC gifted the Scotties service at 8-3 with an errant serve, then Hallie Holthaus posted three straight aces for the Scotties.

The Vikings were able to string together a pair of four-point surges, briefly closing the deficit to single digits before Honeyman recorded the set winner at 25-15.

Missouri Valley managed to keep the second set close, leading 5-3 in the early going, but Highland pulled away to a 16-10 lead and closed out the set.

Highland blasted open a 10-3 lead to open the third set, with Honeyman recording a pair of service aces during a six-point run from the service line. Missouri Valley was not ready to give up, however, answering with a five-point run to narrow the deficit to 13-10.

Another five-point surge tied the third set at 18-18, with the Vikings picking up a rare service ace against the Scotties for the set-tying point, but HCC withstood the comeback attempt with back-to-back points to take a 20-18 edge.

The teams traded points down the stretch, with HCC comfortably retaining the winning margin.

Highland embarks on a nine-match road swing beginning with a trip to Creston, Iowa, to face Southwestern Community College. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
