Moore Touchdown Not Enough For Highland In Home Opener

HIGHLAND, Kan. - Landyn Moore rallied for a late touchdown for Highland, but the Scotties (0-1) fell to no. 5 Snow College (2-0) on Saturday afternoon. HCC mustered 272 yards of total offense on the afternoon, along with a big fourth-down conversion in the second half, but it wasn't enough to pick up the win.

After escaping being pinned on the goal line on its first possession of the game, Highland's defense picked up a couple of big plays on Snow College's first possession, as Kameron Graham had an eight-yard sack on a first-and-15 and the Scotties pressed the Badgers back on a high snap, leaving Snow with a third-and-39 to convert.

HCC held Snow to a field goal, then mounted a 12-play drive covering nearly six minutes. Navi Bruzon rushed for 23 yards on the drive and added three completions to Demetrius Alexandre for 19 yards and a pair of first downs.

The third completion between the duo finished just shy of the first-down marker, but Highland's defense was quick to give the Scotties the ball back, as Jaquay McFadden and Clarence Gaspard collapsed the pocket and forced a quick throw by Snow's Jack Welsch. O'Marion Cohens was able to outwork the Badger receiver and pick off the pass, adding a seven-yard return before being brought down.

Snow found a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 16-0 lead into halftime, adding another touchdown and extra point in the third.

The Scotties found a rhythm to start the fourth quarter, as the defense halted Snow at midfield, forcing the Badgers back into their own territory as the third quarter ended and breaking up a third-down pass attempt to start the fourth.

With Highland starting on its own 18, Gabe McWilliams fired off back-to-back first-down passes to put the Scotties in excellent field position. A 44-yard shot up the middle to Brice Johnson Jr. was followed by an 11-yard completion to Alexandre down the right side to put HCC on the Snow 27-yard line.

After a short screen pass on first down fell short, the Scotties had three shots at the end zone go just out of reach of McWilliams' intended receiver, but the third attempt saw a pair of penalty flags fly. A pass interference penalty gave Highland a fresh set of downs on the Snow 13-yard line, with McWilliams capitalizing with a six-yard scamper.

Bruzon came back in for the Scotties on the next snap, picking up another HCC first down with a four-yard run up the middle.

Moore was stopped for no gain on the next play as he was unable to find a hole through the Snow defense, but the stop was temporary as he blasted through the middle for the touchdown with 11:35 left in the game.

The Scotties opted for a two-point conversion trying to close the gap, but it was unsuccessful.

Highland wasn't able to find another scoring drive over the final moments of the contest.

The Scotties have a bye week before continuing their three-game season-opening homestand against #14 Iowa Central. Kickoff for Homecoming and Family Weekend at Porter Family Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
