Scotties Can't Scratch Out Draw Against Dodge City

HIGHLAND, Kan. - Squaring off against KJCCC Division 1 foe Dodge City (1-0) on Saturday, Highland (0-3-2) put together several stretches of good possession, but the Scotties found themselves on the wrong side of a bit of misfortune in a 1-0 loss.

Highland withstood a steady wave of pressure from Dodge City in the first half, including an second minute penalty kick miss by the Conquistadors. Sydnee Pope tangled with Tara Knego in the penalty area, with the contact drawing a whistle. As Knego stepped up to the spot, McKenna Glade read the attempt well but the shot sailed yards over the goal.

As the first half hour ticked away, HCC found its best chances of the first half, with Valerie Salazar unleashing a shot from 25 yards out that went just left of the post.

Rianne Shaffer-Byers nearly struck for the Scotties in the 30th minute, getting on the end of a well-flighted free kick from Salazar. Her first shot was blocked but fell back to her feet, but Lucy Goss was able to make the near post save on Shaffer-Byers' second shot.

Glade kept Dodge City off the board with a 48th minute save on a Conquistador breakaway, reading Mette Battling's shot well and parrying it to the left. The ball fell dangerously to another Conquistador attacker, but a whistle sounded quickly as she was in an offside position from the original shot.

Dodge City managed to get on the board in the 56th minute, but not without controversy. After intercepting an entry pass, Giulia Ferrarez Dorini tried to play the ball out to the right sideline for an outlet. Her marker kept nipping at her heels, with a kick slightly disrupting Dorini's dribble. The loose ball fell to the foot of Lucia Bennett, who ripped a left-footed blast to the back corner. Glade stretched out on the dive attempting to make the save, but it was just out of reach.

Shaffer-Byers tried to find an equalizer for Highland in the 64th minute, but her shot was parried by Kimya Kante-Mavuba, but the bobble was cleaned up before HCC could put pressure on.

Paige Carrier also collected a trio of chances in the waning moments of the contest, but was unable to break through.

Next up for the Scotties is a road non-conference battle against Crowder College. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Monday.
