HIGHLAND, Kan. - Wrapping up the front half of its KJCCC schedule on Saturday, Highland (3-5-3, 2-2-1 KJCCC) found goals from four different goalscorers in a 4-2 win over Allen County (4-4-1, 0-3-1 KJCCC).
Paige Carrier led the Scottie offense with a goal and an assist on the afternoon.
Highland started off bright from the kickoff, nearly opening the scoring in the ninth minute.
Jolie Galloway collected a pass from the middle of the park and dribbled into the left corner. Her first cross attempt was blocked but fell right back to her feet and her second attempt sailed into a crowd of players in the six-yard box. After a scramble it was desperately cleared by Allen.
Riane Shaffer-Byers also had a threatening opportunity for the Scotties in the 17th minute, dribbling down the right side. After a cutback shook her marker, she sent a left-footed cross into danger, but it hung up in the air just out of reach of a pair of HCC attackers.
Allen managed to get on the board against the run of play in the 40th minute, as a clearance attempt by
McKenna Glade was partially blocked. Pryia Stanger was able to find the ball in a chaotic scramble just right of goal and poke a shot through the crowd.
Galloway leveled the score for Highland in the 44th minute, cleaning up a loose ball on the goal line. After a curling shot by Carrier was parried up and off the crossbar by Niamh Ellison, the ball bounced just in front of the goal line and spun back toward goal. Galloway was able to beat an Allen defender to the loose ball and hammer it into the back of the net.
Highland grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute, as
Ashley Romero collected a long pass through the middle and dribbled toward the end line. After crossing up her defender and clearing space, she curled a right-footed cross to the feet of
Suri Escobedo, who was able to control in traffic and slot the ball past Ellison.
Shaniya Scott marked her return to the lineup with a huge goal in the 68th minute, putting the Scotties up 3-1. After winning a string of throw-ins on the left side, Highland was within 10 yards of the end line. With a big windup,
Giulia Ferrarez Dorini sent a big entry pass over the first line of the Red Devil defense to the feet of Scott. Scott knocked the ball into space and dribbled through two Allen County defenders before slotting the ball to the back post past Ellison.
Romero picked up her second helper of the contest as Highland extended its lead to 4-1 in the 83rd minute. The freshman spun her marker around deep in the 18-yard box, spotting Carrier just above the penalty mark. Carrier was able to one-touch Romero's pass into the top right corner.
Allen County was able to pull one back in the 89th minute, but the result was already in hand.
