Scotties Stall In Fourth Quarter At KCKCC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - In a game that saw shooting for both teams fall off down the stretch, Highland (3-7, 0-2 KJCCC) fared worse in the fourth quarter, falling to Kansas City Kansas Community College (12-6, 1-1 KJCCC) 72-63 on Wednesday.

It took Highland a few moments of the first quarter to settle into a groove, but it was paid in full by the 3:50 mark as the Scotties roared back from an 11-2 deficit as Brittany Jones found Shamiah Johnson in the lane for a layup to tie the game at 11-11.

After taking a pair of brief leads late in the first quarter and trading the lead back and forth with the Blue Devils through the second, Highland mustered a 44-43 halftime lead and extended it to 51-45 at 8:08 in the third quarter.

Cami Dalinghaus picked off Amiyah Fulton with 20 seconds left in the third and raced down court for a layup to give HCC a 57-55 lead, but Fulton was able to answer with a last-second three-pointer to retake the lead heading to the fourth quarter.

An early surge put KCKCC ahead 65-78 with 7:21 left in the contest, but despite holding the Blue Devils to just one field goal over the final seven minutes, Highland was unable to close the gap.

Johnson led the Scotties with 18 points on the night, with Zoe Clarke adding 14. Each grabbed eight rebounds for Highland, while Jones also finished in double figures with 12.

Highland finishes its road swing on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tipoff at Labette Community College.
