HIGHLAND, Kan. - Returning to KJCCC action riding a wave of momentum after a win on Wednesday night, Highland (5-12, 1-7 KJCCC) was able to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by Kansas City Kansas CC (14-11, 2-7 KJCCC) on Saturday in a 73-67 win.
Shamiah Johnson and
Brittany Jones each knocked home 19 points on the night, with Johnson adding 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Highland's edge on the glass was apparent early in the game, as the Scotties opened the scoring with a third-chance basket by
Shamiah Johnson after a pair of three-point misses from the home team. After the early misses, however, Highland settled into a shooting rhythm, building a 10-point lead on a 9-of-16 field goal pace.
The second quarter wasn't as smooth for Highland, as a 0-7 drought from three-point range allowed KCKCC to close the ten-point deficit and go into the locker room with a 41-39 lead.
That lead lasted just two minutes into the third quarter, as Johnson battled to grab a rebound off a badly missed triple by Sandra Hracka then posted up in the lane on the opposite end for an easy dish from Jones to tie the game at 43-43. A second-chance layup from Johnson put Highland up by two with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the third.
After going cold from distance in the second quarter, Highland turned it around in the third, with Jones hitting four of her five longballs after the halfway point to extend the Scottie lead to 61-53.
Just like the first meeting between the teams this season, Highland went to the fourth quarter looking to extend its lead. And as in the previous matchup, a bucket by Johnson pushed the Scotties to their largest lead of the period. Unlike the previous meeting, however, Highland was able to clamp down on the Blue Devils defensively and close out the contest.
KCKCC was able to close within a single possession twice. A pair of free throws by Presley Simpson brought KCKCC within a 63-60 deficit with 4:12 left and Amiyah Fulton answered a layup by Jones to close to 65-62 with 2:51 to play, but Highland used a 6-2 surge to put the game out of reach.
Highland is on the road for a final non-conference game on Monday, taking on North Central Missouri College in a contest rescheduled from earlier this season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
