Coach Watkins is in his second season at Highland Community College. Watkins serves as Defensive Backs Coach and Outbound Recruiting Coordinator. Coach Watkins is responsible for coaching the defensive backs as well as corresponding with 4-year schools about current Highland football players available for recruitment.
A Lawrence, KS native, Watkins holds a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Kansas and completed his Masters in the same field in May of 2021. While at KU, Watkins served as a recruiting assistant from January 2018 to August of 2019. During his time at KU, he assisted with all recruiting operations as well as assisting offensive coaches. In August of 2019, Coach Watkins was hired at Howard University in Washington, D.C. where he served as an Offensive Quality Control coach during the 2019 season for former NFL & Kansas State coach Ron Prince. After Week 4 during the same season, Watkins was promoted to interim offensive assistant where he helped coach quarterbacks and running backs. Citing a desire to return closer to Kansas, Coach Watkins accepted the RB Coach position at Highland in February of 2020.
Coach Watkins’ recruiting area is the Kansas City metro area and he takes great pride in being able to recruit student athletes from the area where he grew up. “Recruiting in Kansas City is personally significant to me. I grew up in northeast Kansas, so coaching and recruiting here is a family affair for me.”
Coach Watkins is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance and an Air Raid Coaching Certificate recipient.
