Coach DJ Mayo joins Highland for the 2023 season as the Head Coach. He comes to Highland after serving two seasons as Offensive Coordinator/RB’s coach at Camden County HS (GA). The Wildcats qualified for the 7A playoffs during both seasons.
Prior to his time at Camden County, Coach Mayo served as the Head Coach at Atlantic High School in Port Orange, FL. The Sharks were winless in two of the three seasons prior to his arrival. In year one of his arrival, the Sharks finished with a winning record and followed that up in 2019 with the school’s first playoff appearance in seven years. During that season, Coach Mayo helped lead the Sharks to their first playoff win in 23 years, while tying the school record for wins in a season. For these efforts he was named the Daytona Beach News Journal Coach of the Year, as well as the 5-Star Conference Coach of the Year.
In 2016 and 2017, Coach Mayo served as the Defensive Coordinator at Spruce Creek High School. The 2016 season saw the defense help lead the program to a district championship-- just the third in school history. Despite losing nine starters, the Hawks finished 9-1 the following season.
Coach Mayo has been a part of turnarounds at Deland High School (FL), Atlantic High School (Offensive Coordinator), Chamberlain High School (Head Coach) and won a district championship as head coach at Warner Christian Academy (2014). He has qualified for the playoffs as an offensive coordinator (Atlantic, Camden County), defensive coordinator (Spruce Creek), and as a head coach (Warner Christian, Atlantic).
Coach Mayo is a native of Daytona Beach, FL and has one daughter, Madison.
