Scotties Win Home Opener 126-49


Highland, Kan.- The Scottie women's basketball team had no trouble in their home opener on Tuesday night as they defeated the Junior Varsity Statesmen of William Penn University 126-49.
 
Highland, led in scoring by freshman Mariane Carvalho with 30 points, had six players score in double figures on the night. 1st Team All-American, Szonja Vukov, started her sophomore campaign with a double double earning 14 points and 13 rebounds. Vukov also contributed five assists and three steals. Freshman point guard, Blaize Burgess had a great night behind the arc going 4-5 from three-point range and finishing with 20 points in her first collegiate game. Jameka Dowell had 14 points, Imani Simmons also finished with 14 and Tiana Cook also posted a double double with 12 points & 10 rebounds on the night.
 
The Highland bench players contributed 57 points on the night. Highland's tough full court press had the Statesmen on their heels most of the night and forced 30 turnovers leading to 44 points for the Scotties. The Highland defense held William Penn to shooting 25% from the field on the night.
 
The Scotties also dominated the rebounding battle pulling down 57 boards to William Penn's 23.
 
Highland will travel to Iola, KS to compete in the Allen Community College tournament on Friday and Saturday. They will take on Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Friday at 1:00pm and will play Redlands Community College at 1:00pm on Saturday.
