Highland bounced back after their first loss of the season last week with a 74-55 victory over the University of Saint Mary JV on Monday night.
Â
A total of nine points were scored in the first 10 minutes of Monday night's ball game; something the fans at Ben Allen Field House aren't accustom. Highland held the Spires to scoring only three points in the 1
st quarter but only were able to score six of their own.
Â
Highland got things turned around in the 2
nd quarter scoring 30 points mostly on the backs of freshman Mariane Caravalho who scored 13 and sophomore
Szonja Vukov who added in 11 in the first half.
Â
The Scotties didn't shoot the ball that well on the night going 36% from the floor and 27% from behind the arc. It was their defense and rebounding that helped lead them to victory over the Spires. Highland kept the Spires to shooting only 24% from the floor and 5-34 from three-point range, 15%. Highland also won the rebound war 54-32.
Â
Mariane Caravalho put up big numbers scoring 27 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals but it was
Szonja Vukov who stole the night after she made her third field goal giving Vukov the most career field goals in HCC history at 318. The previous mark was held by Shanell Watson who played in 2001-2002 who made 317 field goals in her career. Vukov now holds the record at 323 and counting.
Â
Ashlyn McDonald had one of her better performances of the season scoring seven points and grabbing eight rebounds.
Â
"A lot of rust and a lot of mistakes," commented Head Coach
BJ Smith in his
post-game interview, "but glad to get the win and now we have to get ready for Johnson County on Saturday."
Â
Saturday is set to be one of the best matchups of the season with Highland coming in #4 in the NJCAA DIV II poll followed up by #5 Johnson County CC. That game will tip-off at 1:00pm from Ben Allen Field House in Highland, KS.
