The Men's Scottie basketball team has won their first ever KJCCC Region VI Conference Championship after they came out on top in a close game against the Labette Cardinals 75-74.
The first half of the ball game Highland stayed ahead, led by
Dontre English with 12 points. The Scotties only had a 4-point lead heading into the locker room after the first half of play.
The Cards didn't give up their fight as they cut the gap to just two after hitting a pair of threes with 11:44 left in the game. With a couple big baskets by
Andre Jackson and
Stephon Jackson the Scotties go their lead back, 65-63, with 4:51 left on the clock. HCC was down 69-73 with 2:36 left in the game but English drains a huge three and takes the lead back 75-74 and that score would expire out the clock leaving the Scotties victorious.
English had another big night as he led with 22 points, 3-5 from behind the arc, and 5 assists. Five rebounds and 14 points for
Andre Jackson, his career high, and 13 for
Stephon Jackson.
Highland has finished the regular season games with a 23-7 overall record; the best record since 1984. They secured their 1
st place finish in the Division II KJCCC Conference and will host the winner of Brown Mackie College and Fort Scott CC on Monday, March 6
th at 7:30PM in Ben Allen Field House. Â
