The Highland Scotties fell to the Independence Pirates on Saturday in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matchup 68-10.
The Pirates dominated the first half of play, scoring 26 in the first quarter and 16 in in the second quarter to lead 42-0 at halftime. The losing margin, while high, could have been far worse if the Highland defense hadn't rallied in the second half to make key plays and cause turnovers against Independence.
Freshman
Quinn Buessing continues to lead the KJCCC in passing yards and average yards per game, and ranks #13 in the NJCAA in the same categories. Buessing threw for 180 yards with a touchdown and one interception against Independence.
The Scotties broke their two-game scoreless streak when
Malik Chatman grabbed a botched extra point try and ran 90 yards for a two-point defensive conversion.
Cam McKinney scored the only touchdown for Highland on a six-yard pass from
Quinn Buessing in the third quarter.
Deontay Campbell scored a two-point conversion after McKinney's touchdown from a pass by the kicker
Will Greig after a bad snap for the extra point.
The Scotties are on the road for the next two weekends, playing Butler on May 1 at 7:00 p.m. in El Dorado, KS and Hutchison on May 9 at 1:00 p.m. in Hutchison, KS. The Scotties return to Porter Family Stadium for the final game of the season on May 23 at 1:00 p.m. Be sure to catch all the action on the Scottie Sports Network!
