Last Week in Scottie Athletics…
 
The Scottie Cross Country teams finished their 2023 campaign Saturday at the NJCAA National meet held in Huntsville, Alabama. The Scottie women's team finished as the 23^rd place team scoring 626-points.
 
The Scottie men were the 25^th place team with 736-points. Freshman Annabel Reyes (Harlingen, Texas) paced the Lady Scotties with a 102-place finish, completing the course in 20:57.10. The Scottie men were led by freshman Emile Gaubert (France) who finished the 8K course in 27:57.80 placing him in 140^th place overall. See complete results below.

Our Scottie basketball teams had their ups and downs last week with both teams playing three games. The Scottie women traveled to Lawrence Tuesday afternoon to take on Haskell Indian Nations University. The Scotties jumped out early and never looked back leading 35-7 at halftime. The Scotties continued to pull away in the second half and won by the final of 81-33. Freshman Jalasia Hull (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) led all scorers with 22-points. Freshman Cameron McNamara (Downingtown, Pennsylvania) was the only other player with double figures, scoring 15-points.
 
The Scottie men were also in action Tuesday when they hosted Kansas Wesleyan University. Unlike the women's game, the Scottie men had all they wanted with the KW Coyotes as they struggled to a 37-36 halftime lead. The battle for the win was finally won by the Scotties as they outscored the Coyotes by 10-points in the second half for an 82-71 victory. Sophomore Chris Flippin (New Orleans, Louisianna) had 30-points and 18 rebounds. Sophomore Josh Owens (Arden, North Carolina) and freshman Bubba Leavell (Hopkinsville, Kentucky) both had 15-points in the win.
 
Both teams left for Classics Friday with the women traveling to North Central Missouri College and the men to Johnson County Community College. (A basketball "classic" is a set, two-game schedule (not a tournament) at one site. The host school usually invites a conference/area school to be the other "home" team and they both play the same opponents over the two days. We host the Scottie Classic this coming weekend with Johnson County and we both play OnPoint Academy and Arkansas State University (ASU) Mid-South.)
 
Friday, the Lady Scotties took on the Iowa Western Reivers in what proved to be a very good basketball game. The Scotties took a 1-point lead into halftime and were in control of the game until about four minutes left to play, and then everything fell apart for Highland. In the end, the Reivers took home a 64-52 win. The Scotties were paced by sophomore Sha'Coria Hill (Fort Worth, Texas) with 14-points. Freshman Makayla Lemelle (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) added 11-points for the Scotties.
 
Saturday, the Scottie women looked to get back to their winning ways when they took on Des Moines Area Community College. Despite the poor shooting by the Scotties, they outscored the DMACC Bears by 10-points in the second half to win by the final of 65-59. Lemelle was Highland's leading scorer with 19-points while Hill added 15-points in the victory. 
 
The Scottie men faced off against the Ottawa University Braves Friday afternoon. It proved to be a fairly easy day for the Scotties as they won by the final of 102-55. Flippin led the way with 18-points. Freshman Brazil Hutchinson (Washington D.C.) had 14-points and a team-high 9 rebounds off the bench for the Scotties.
 
Saturday, the Scotties faced off against #10 nationally ranked Iowa Lakes Community College. Unfortunately, the Scotties dug an early hole and never found a way out of it, falling to the Lakers by the final of 84-66. Flippin finished with a team-high 16-points while Owens had a double-double with 14-points and 10 rebounds.
 
Both Scottie basketball teams are now 4-1 overall.
 
This Week in Scottie Athletics…
 
It is a big week for our Scottie basketball teams. The Lady Scotties kick it off when they host the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. Next, the men's take on ASU Mid-South Friday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. on the first day of the Scottie Classic held at Allen Field House. On Saturday, both teams are in action with the men playing against OnPoint Academy at 3 p.m. and the women hosting the Southeast Community College Bobcats at 5:30 p.m. Looking ahead, the Lady Scotties are home again Monday, Nov. 20, when they host Haskell Indian Nations University at 5:30 p.m. See below for the entire Scottie Classic schedule.
