The Highland Scotties Track & Field program wrapped up its outdoor regular season over the last two weekends at the T-Bird Classic in Concordia, Kansas and at the Mule Relays held at Central Missouri. Heading into the post season, Highland has qualified 3 athletes for the NJCAA Division 1 Track & Field Championships held in Hobbs, New Mexico on May 18-20: Andwele Shurland (pole vault),
Dayjahney Hibbert (triple jump and high jump), and
Alexis O'Farrell (javelin).
Head Coach Kathy Graham said, "At Central Missouri we saw some really good performances based on competitiveness, fitness, strategy. We lost some of that at the T-Bird Classic, but we are looking forward to the Region VI meet for some big performances by our athletes that are locking in on their events and the fitness, aggression and technique needed to make it on the big stage of the national meet."Â

After the meet Coach Graham added, "It was a small meet with a lot of athletes scratching due to the cold and the wind. We had athletes place in nearly every event they competed. However, we lacked the spark of competition we are needing at this time during the season. We are looking for fitness, aggression and technique—great fundamentals. As a team, we failed to bring those things. The throwers are making solid improvements, with all 3 of them throwing 30% better than they did the last meet. The middle-distance runners and the 4x400 team, ran great races with the strategy we have worked on in practice, over and over, and they went and competed. We can't ask for a better day than that! We will continue what we are doing, and just refine the process. We have regionals coming up next week, and we are planning to bring a great push for that!"
