Highland Baseball Take 3 of 4 in Series Win Over Labette

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Game 1:  Highland – 12
               Labette - 0
The Scotties used a four-run third inning and a seven-run fourth inning on the way to a run-ruled shortened game 1 win against the Labette Community College Cardinals on Friday in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Highland used 11 hits, including three home runs, to tally 12 runs total in game 1 of the series against Labette. Jhors Gomez, Lander Suarez and Gustavo Nava all contributed home runs for the Scotties, while eight out of nine Scottie hitters recorded at least one hit.

On the mound, Freshman Joan Gonzalez got the start for Highland, throwing all five innings in the run-rule shortened contest. Gonzalez allowed only three hits and struck out six collecting the win for Highland. Pitching Coach Ross Davis commented on Gonzalez's ability to keep the Cardinal hitters off-balance, "Joan worked his way through Labette's line up well and was able to settle in nicely. His ability to throw multiple pitches is what allowed him to be successful today."
Other highlights for the Scotties in game 1 included Jason Dudzik, Victor Sanchez, and Justin Carinci all recording multiple hits in the contest.

Game 2: Highland – 10
              Labette – 8

The Scotties were down 7-2 going into the seventh inning but Highland rallied for eight runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to come roaring back and take game 2 of the series by the score of 10-8.

In the top of the seventh inning, Sophomore Avery Miller stepped to the plate to lead off for the Scotties. Miller hit the first pitch he saw and sent it soaring over the left-field wall. Miller's homerun lead to seven unanswered runs for the Scotties over the next two innings and Highland would go onto win game 2 10-8. Sanchez, Bucovetsky, and Miller all tallied multi-hit games for Highland. The Scotties also stole five bases in game 2 bringing their season total to 26.

Sophomore Max Milligan picked up the win for the Scotties throwing two innings of scoreless relief. The right-hander allowed no hits and struck out three. Sophomore Austin Gottula picked up his first save of the season for the Scotties, closing the door on Labette and completing the comeback in the ninth.

Head Coach Landon Hay had the following to say after the doubleheader: "I am proud of the way our players fought today, especially in game 2 after we got punched in the mouth bit, we found a way to stay calm and score runs. I am also very proud of the effort our bullpen put in today! If we pitch like that, we have a chance to win a lot of games."

Game 3: Labette – 5
              Highland – 8

Behind a strong performance on the mound from Freshman Jacob Gajic, the Scotties clinched the series with an 8-5 win in game 3 of the series.

Jhors Gomez went 4-4 at the plate with a double and a home run to lead the charge at the plate for the Scotties. "Jhors was absolutely on fire today and he is really seeing the ball well. It is certainly a tough out whenever he is at the plate and there is potential for something special to happen anytime he is in the box", said Coach Hay after the game.

Game 4: Labette – 7
              Highland – 6

In a wild finale to the series between Highland and Labette, the Scotties came up just short after tying the game in the bottom of the ninth using a three-run blast off the bat of Gustavo Nava. After working the count full and fouling off several pitches, Nava unleashed a powerful swing that resulted in a ball disappearing into the Pittsburg, Kansas sky over the right-field wall sending the game to extra innings. A defensive miscue in the top of the tenth lead to the Cardinals pushing across the seventh would be a winning run.

Dylan Weaver threw 6.2 innings of quality relief work for the Scotties in the loss, coach Hay said he was incredibly proud of how Dylan came in and quieted the Labette offense after they jumped out to a four-run lead and allowed the Scotties a chance to work back into the game.

"Our guys played well all weekend and if a couple of things go differently we're headed home with a sweep. We swung the bats well all weekend and I felt like we pitched it incredibly well for the most part after last weekend against Cowley where we were obviously disappointed. Hats off to Labette for taking advantage of a few of our mistakes and scratching out the win in a wild game 4, it was certainly a wild way to end the weekend and now we turn our focus to Coffeyville on Tuesday."

Up-Next for the Scotties:
Highland (4-7 overall) (3-4 KJCCC) will have the day off on Sunday before traveling to Coffeyville Tuesday, March 30 for the first of two doubleheaders rescheduled from earlier in the month. The Scotties will then travel to Fort Scott on Thursday, April 1 for a doubleheader against the Greyhounds to open up another KJCCC series. The series with Fort Scott will conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Highland Community Ballpark on Saturday, April 3.
