HIGHLAND, Kan. - Originally envisioned as a week-long awareness campaign to promote the benefits of regular mammograms for early detection, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has grown into a worldwide annual recognition each October. Highland Community College is honored to do our part in helping bring awareness to a disease that will affect one in every eight women during their lifetime with recognition nights at three home contests during the month of October.
Beginning the month, Highland women's soccer celebrates its Breast Cancer Awareness game alongside Sophomore Day against Johnson County Community College on Wednesday, Oct. 8. In addition to adding a dash of pink to the Navy and Gold with field players wearing pink socks and HCC's goalkeepers donning a full pink kit, the Scotties will observe a moment of silence prior to the starting lineups honoring the millions of survivors worldwide as well as those who have passed.
In addition to wearing pink shoelaces throughout the month of October, Scottie Volleyball will host a Dig Pink match on Wednesday, Oct. 15, against Independence Community College. Highland will trade its traditional home navy jerseys for pink jerseys for the match. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Ben Allen Field House.
Rounding out October's home contests, Highland football will host its Pink Out game against College of DuPage on Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and in addition to asking fans to fill the Porter Family Stadium stands with pink, Highland Student Life will have an assortment of pink items for all of Scottie Nation to add to their support of Scottie Football.
Throughout the month of October, the Highland Bookstore will also be offering special deals on a collection of pink apparel to help raise awareness. Visit their
website or stop by Irvin Hall (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon. through Fri., 12:30 through halftime on football gamedays) to check out all of the options to show your Highland spirit.
