HIGHLAND, Kan. - The recent snow storm and intense cold have combined to wreak havoc on all of Highland's spring sports teams save Track and Field. The Scotties are set for the 2025 Region 6/KJCCC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Pittsburg State University, with competition slated for Feb. 22-23, in the Plaster Sports Center. On the other hand, both basketball squads along with baseball and softball have been forced into major rewrites of their schedules.
In addition to the postponement of Highland's doubleheader at Allen County, now scheduled for Mon., Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Highland's Saturday doubleheader against Labette Community College has been changed. Highland's women will have a bye week as the Cardinals were forced to discontinue their schedule mid-season. We will recognize three sophomore student-athletes for men's basketball prior to the HCC's 3 p.m. tipoff against the Cardinals.
Baseball has postponed its originally scheduled round-robin against Des Moines Area Community College and Hutchinson Community College, with the teams scheduled to meet in a one-day triangular series on Mon., Feb. 24. The Scotties will take on the Bears at 11 a.m. at Hobart-Detter Field and then challenge the Blue Dragons at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Softball has suffered the most damage to its early schedule. After losing their home opening weekend against Southeast Community College and Central Community College to weather, the Scotties were also forced to cancel this weekend's road doubleheader at North Central Missouri College and postpone the Feb. 25 doubleheader against Southwestern Community College to Tues., Mar. 4.
If the weather forecasts hold, both of Highland's diamond sports teams hope to make their home debut the weekend of Feb. 28-Mar. 1, with baseball hosting Southwestern Community College for a four-game series and softball welcoming Hawkeye Community College on Friday and McCook Community College on Saturday.
