Â
Scottie Volleyball had an up and down week, but clearly showing further improvement and playing well. The Scotties looked to avenge two earlier losses to Southeast Community College (Neb.) when they hosted the Bobcats (new mascot, formerly the Storm) on Wednesday afternoon in Allen Field House. The Scotties outfought the Bobcats in the first set to win 25-23 and never looked back. Highland outscored the ladies from Nebraska 25-5 and 25-12 for the 3-0 win. Freshman
Addyson Holthaus (Seneca) led the Scotties with 21 kills to go along with 10 digs. Freshman
Elise Curry (Berryton) had a team-high 31 assists while freshman
Claire Jobbins (Winchester) led Highland with 20 digs. It gave the Scotties their fifth win of the season.
Â
The busy schedule continued with a road match against conference opponent Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday night. Our youth and inexperience show on little rest and travel. The Blue Devils jumped out to quick leads in all three sets, winning the match 3-0 with scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-16. Holthaus led the Scotties with 11 kills and Curry again led with 16 assists.
Â
The Lady Scotties then hosted the North Platte Community College Knights Friday afternoon and ran into a bit of a buzz saw. The Knights came out hot, outscoring Highland 25-19 and 25-18 in the first two sets. In the third set, the Scotties looked rejuvenated and took control of the set only to have a late surge by the Knights end the match with a final set score of 28-26.
Â
Highland Football hosted Gordon's Fine Arts and Sports Academy Saturday afternoon at Porter Family Stadium, and it proved to be a record-breaking day for the Scotties. The Scotties defeated the Panthers from Oklahoma by the final of 49-0. It marked the first back-to-back shut-out wins since 1964 (defeating Peru State JV 19-0 and Haskell 49-0) and the first back-to-back shut-outs since 1986 (tied NIACC 0-0, defeating Tarkio JV 14-0). The Scottie defense set a new single game record by only allowing -44 yards rushing by the Panthers.
Â
The Scotties dominated in every facet of the game. The offense racked up 246 yards on the ground and 80 yards in the air. On defense, Highland did not allow a first down all day and held the Panthers to -41 total yards.
Â
Freshman wide receiver
Benson Prosper (Miami, Fla.) got the scoring started in the first quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Tysan Robbins (Orlando, Fla.). The
Adonis Coyle (freshman, St. Marys, Ga.) point after attempt was good for a 7-0 lead.
Â
The first of four Scottie touchdowns in the second quarter came on a Robbins to freshman wide-out
Dariyonne Bryant (Portsmouth, Ohio) 26-yard pass. A Coyle PAT made it 14-0. Less than a minute later, freshman defensive back
Brayden Uphaus (Seneca) had the first of his two pick-six scores with a 30-yard interception return. Coyle again made the PAT for a 21-0 lead. Mid-way through the second quarter, running back
Dontrevius Jackson (sophomore, St. Petersburg, Fla.) broke loose and scampered into the endzone for a dazzling 66-yard rushing touchdown. Coyle again made the PAT. The last Scottie score of the quarter was a familiar one with Uphaus again picking off a Panther pass for an 18-yard touchdown with another Coyle kick making it a 35-0 Scottie lead at halftime.
Â
The Scotties slowed the game down in the second half, getting more playing time for players that are lower on the depth chart. In the third quarter, freshman wide-out
Marquan Jamerson (Montgomery, Ala.) scored from 36-yards out on the ground for his first rushing touchdown of 2023. (The Coyle kick was good). In the fourth quarter, freshman wide receiver
Braden Simmons of local fame (Highland, son of Alum and HCC employee Barry Simmons) crossed the goal line from 10-yards out for his first college score. The seventh Coyle PAT was good, placing him second all-time in the Scottie history books for single game made extra points.
Â
The victory moved the Scotties to 3-3 overall and they remain 2-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.
