Scottie Volleyball
The Scotties hosted Fort Scott Community College on Wednesday night at Allen Field House. This all-important match had serious playoff implications with the winner most likely making it into the post-season and the loser dropping out of contention. These two teams were very evenly matched with the Greyhounds taking the first set 25-15, the Scotties bouncing back to take the second 25-14, then the Greyhounds won 25-23, and then the Scotties again recovered to take the fourth set by the final of 25-23. That forced a fifth winner-take-all set and in the end the Greyhounds prevailed by the final of 15-11. Highland was led by freshman
Addy Holthaus (Seneca) with 21 kills to go along with 19 digs. Freshman
Elise Curry (Berryton) led Highland with 19 assists. Freshman
Samantha Nordhus (Seneca) had a team-high 23 digs.
On Thursday night, the Scotties took the court against the Ottawa University Junior Varsity Braves in Allen Field House. The Scotties prevailed 3-0 and got their seventh victory of the season. Holthaus led Highland with 17 kills and 17 digs. Curry had 24 assists and Nordhus also had 17 digs.
On Saturday, the Lady Scotties traveled to Creston, Iowa for a triangular. The Scotties defeated Iowa Lakes Community College 3-0 in the first match-up. In the next match, Highland took down host Southwestern Community College by the final of 3-0. We are still waiting for the stats for these matches. The Scotties are now 9-13 overall for the season.
Scottie Football
The Scotties continued their winning ways on Saturday with a 56-0 romp of the Lions from Detroit Community Christian College. It was the fourth shut-out victory of the season for the Scotties.
The Scotties were led by sophomore quarterback
Brinley Vandiver (Kansas City, Mo.) with 140 yards on 11 of 12 passing. Sophomore
Benson Prosper (Miami, Fla.) led Highland with five receptions for 87 yards while fellow sophomore
Mendez Jean-Baptiste (Orlando, Fla.) had four catches for 40 yards and had a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown.
The Scottie ground game scored five of their six offensive touchdowns this week. Freshman
Antwaine McDuffie (Douglas, Ga.) scored two touchdowns while rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore
Dontrevius Jackson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) ran for 36 yards on six carries and one score. Sophomore
Jordan Jackson (Reserve, La.) and Vandiver also had scoring runs for the Scotties.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Scotties were led by freshman linebacker
Alex Gunderson (Olathe) with five total stops including three solo and one for loss. Sophomore
Dominique Stevenson (Dallas, Tex.) had a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown and freshman
Jalen Foster (Lakeland, Fla.) had a 45-yard pick six, both in the second quarter.
The Scotties are 3-2 in Jayhawk Conference play and 6-3 overall. Big game this week!!
Upcoming This Week….
It's a big week for our Scottie athletic teams. All three of the Fall sports teams are in action against some of the best competition they will face this year.
Scottie Volleyball will finish up their 2023 season on Saturday, Oct. 28 against #7 ranked Johnson County Community College at 5:00 p.m. in Allen Field House.
Scottie Cross Country is headed to Iola, Kan., for the Region VI championships hosted by Allen Community College. The Lady Scottie harriers run at 11:00 a.m. and the men get going at 12:00 p.m.
Gridiron fans, this is the one we have been waiting for. It is our 6-3 Highland Scotties against the 7-0 Hutchinson Blue Dragons. The Scotties host the #1 ranked Blue Dragons at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Kessinger Field. As of right now, it looks like rain but this one you really shouldn't miss!
