HIGHLAND, Kan. - After a solid second-half performance in the first meeting between the teams this season, Highland (3-8-3, 2-5-1 KJCCC) came into Wednesday's match looking to weather the storm and escape with a point against no. 2 Johnson County (14-0, 7-0 KJCCC) and stay within reach of the playoffs. Despite a solid first half, an early second-half goal for the Cavaliers broke the ice and Highland dropped a 2-0 result.
Highland was able to hold its own in the early minutes of the first half, keeping the Cavaliers out of the final third after a second-minute chance was stopped by
McKenna Glade on the right side of her goal.
The Scotties managed to put together a threatening chance in the 12th minute, finding a break through midfield.
Della Arnold held off her defender and sent a right-footed shot on goal, forcing Avery Young into a save.
Highland managed to hold possession for nearly a third of the opening 45 minutes, taking a 0-0 draw into the halftime break.
In the 63rd minute, what looked like a hopeful cross turned into a goal for Johnson County, as Madison Smith sent a curling ball into the box from the left touchline. The cross hung up in the air and drifted, forcing Glade into an awkward parry attempt that sent the ball off the crossbar and in.
Despite the goal, Highland held strong and looked as though the match would end 1-0, before an 89th-minute effort doubled the Cavalier lead.
Highland is on the road Saturday for a regional crossover match, traveling to take on Southeast Community College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
